Te Kawa Poll Dorsets was registered in 1959. Previously my Grandfather Eric ran Dorset horn sheep then in 1957 he and RV Pratt headed to Tasmania and purchased six Poll Dorset Ewes and two Rams.
My father and myself now run Te Kawa Poll Dorsets at Rangiwahia, North Island, New Zealand on a 900ha property under the Ruahine Ranges 700m above sea level and up. Along side a commercial flock are Angus cattle and Red deer.
Our Rams are wintered here on the home flats 700m and up the road at 800m. The ewe hoggets are run with the commercial flock at 800 to 900m on the rougher country. 50% of the ewe hoggets are selected for the stud on SIL values and structural soundness. The ewes are culled on constitution and performance.
Our aim is to produce high growth weight lambs with a meaty carcass. Sires selected are from within our flock and from Megameat members. We have also used AI from proven rams. This has allowed our rams to be in the top percentage of terminal sires in New Zealand (SIL-ace and Poll Dorset across flock analysis).
