While working as a skilled machinery operator for a local agricultural contracting business, Paul Leslie found he was at a loose end during the off season so in 2011 to find work to fill in the quieter months he bought a second-hand Sumitomo eight tonne digger and set up P.R. Leslie Contracting. Soon after he started the business, Paul purchased a Foden truck to transport the digger from job to job and for general cartage work. A year later the workload was increasing so Paul's younger brother Phil joined the company as a machinery operator. In November 2013 Paul said goodbye to the original Sumitomo digger and traded it in for a brand new 2013 Komatsu PC88 digger. In February 2014 he purchased a larger second-hand Komatsu PC228 digger which has been used mainly to do development work on farms and forests. In July 2016 Paul sold the old Komatsu PC228 22.5-tonne digger and a few months later bought a brand new 2016 DAF truck. The DAF is now the operation's main truck and is used for general cartage, hauling lime to the Kenepuru Heads, and harvesting maize silage for Leslie Bros Ag Contracting Limited.
