New Zealand Pet Foods was founded in 1987 by Russell and Karen Gawn primarily as a farm based processing operation providing local farmers with Real Meat Dog Tucker. By 1989, demand had increased to include South Island wide sales to supermarkets, pet stores, and butcheries. This resulted in the need to relocate to larger premises in order to increase capacity and establish an injured stock procurement / processing service. In 2000, the company moved to Adair Abattoirs, inland from Timaru. As demand for New Zealand Pet Foods products increased, and the processing operation proved successful, it was decided in 2005 to split the company into two divisions. Stock procurement and processing at Adair, whilst manufacturing, sales and marketing were relocated to a new purpose built facility in Timaru. This current structure allows for complete control over every aspect of procurement and both primary and secondary processing of raw materials. Adair Abattoirs now run three stock collection trucks throughout the Mid Canterbury to North Otago region, which enables them to offer a quick and simple pick up service for farmers.
