Like so many agricultural contractors before them, the McCarthy brothers of Ladbrooks near Christchurch used to look upon their business as a stepping-stone to farming, but the enterprise has grown into something more substantial than many farms. Founded about 20 years ago, McCarthy Contracting Ltd keeps ten loyal staff busy year-round and employs up to 25 in the harvest season. It all started when Robert who was working for contractors in his local district spotted an opening for round baling. Robert ran the business on his own for two years while his brother Grant, who was then working as a diesel mechanic, helped out at evenings and weekends but rapid growth saw it develop into a dynamic business with year-round work.
